DREAM TEAM

Committed to the Cause

MAI SAECHOU

President

Mai Saechou, former Miss Iu Mien America 2002 winner, is of Hmong and Mien descent. She took after her mom's surname to preserve the Saechou heritage. She received her BA from CSU Sacramento and has been active in the Mien community since the age of 9. Mai has helped to establish and found various community outreach programs such as Mien Club at CK McClatchy High School.

She has also been extremely involved in her community, from her involvement with performing at the IMSC Iu Mien Student Conference to being an integral member in the Mien Woman’s Committee, United Iu Mien Cal Expo 2003 New Year planning comittee, 2003 pageant trainer and Sunday school teacher at International Fellowship Church for the Mien service.  In addition she also has experience volunteering as a decoy with the Sacramento Police Department on raising awareness regarding alcohol.

Mai’s drive for her community stems from life is more complete when she helps others. In 2017, she established Sacramento Iu Mien Association (SIMA), a non-profit organization focused on fostering and preserving the Mien heritage in the Sacramento region. SIMA’s activities range from hosting pageants to fostering growth in youth through supporting education and extracurricular activities such as sporting events. This past year, she hosted Miss Iu Mien pageant 2018 and Meet & Greet with City of Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg on the importance of civil engagement in the Iu Mien community.

These days, Mai spends her time working in management and focusing her efforts on helping her community through the work of SIMA.

Currently, she is on the advisory board for Asian Association of North Sacramento. She’s administering multiple social media group pages such as SIMA group page, Miss Iu Mien pageant/SIMA page, instagram SIMA, webmaster for Sacima.net and moderator for Mien Around the World. You can also find her music video under Earmuzic YouTube channel. She released her first song “Meih Maiv Hnamv” in May 2018 with over 15K views. “To be truly successful, you must be in balance with all aspects of life and being of service is a big part of that balance.”

As a community, it’s important for us to join hands and raise our voices to important issues that may come up. For over 20 years, Iu Mien ethnicity has struggled to be recognized in society. Today is a step forward in giving our members an opportunity to make a change. In order to really be able to instill change, we need to join in with others who have an appreciation for our struggles. Collaboration with other ethnic groups such as Laos, Hmong, Chinese, etc, do not hold us back, however, allow us to better learn and grow from one another. It is only through joining hands with other segregated cultures that we can really learn and grow.
